Essential Items to bring to Mongolia
(In our opinion)
- Water Purifying Tablets
- First Aid kit
- tablets to help with both constipation and diarhea.
- Photocopies of all your essential documents such as passports, train/plane tickets, medical insurance, credit cards etc...
- Plastic or metal knife fork and spoon
- Small waterproof bags to put important items such as orginal and copies of your essential documents (in two seperate bags stored in two different places of course)
- A pair of strong sunglasses (both in terms of protection and physical durability)
- A bottle of high protection suncream
- The Lonely Planet Mongolian - English phrasebook
- Spare reserves of cash hidden in various places, USD in waterproof bags are best, credit cards are useless outside of Mongolia
- A card with all the essential numbers in Mongolia such as the SOS clinique, your airline, your tour operator, your embassy etc....
- A card or tag with who you are written on it and who should be called in case of an emergency,if you can have it written in Mongolian as well as english its even better.
- A hat
- A good medical insurance that will pay for your medical costs in Mongolia and bring you back to your passport holding country, make sure it includes all the raptriation costs and evacuation costs in Country. Also verify that they work with SOS clinique in Mongolia as they are the only ones to have expat medical staff, a helicopter on stand bye in Ulaanbaatar and a medical jet on standby in Beijing (1 and a half hours away)
- A leatherman or a good pocket knife is very useful (make sure you place it in you checked luggage at the airport)
- A map of Mongolia
- A good sleepingbag as nights get chilly, even in summer
- A good windbreaker jacket
- a smile and a sense of adventure
Please note that depending on your mode of travel some of the items on this list are more essential then others, if you travel as a backpacker you will need all of those and more, if you travel in luxury less of those will apply.
