Northern Mongolia is still home to the ancient nature-religion of Shamanism. Shamanism involves the worship of nature spirits through the medium of a shaman, a type of trance medium. The shaman beats a drum whilst wearing a ritual costume and goes into a trance-state, whereby the spirits of the region are induced to look favourably on human endeavour, so often threatened in this sometimes harsh and wild land. Shamanism is now a rare phenomena, but we can arange to see a performance if booked well in advance.
