Every year new hotels come on the Ulaanbaatar hospitality scene, none so far can be described as luxurious. Here are a few we thing are quite descent ranging in price from the guest houses to the more established hotels. Mongolian Resorts would be happy to help you book into any of the hotels below. If you would like more information about the hotels click on their name to bring up rates and descriptions. To book a hotel please contact us. Please note that the following star ratings are not based on what the hotel tells you (most are very liberal in their claim and tell you that they have 5 stars) but what we believe it is worth. The Mongolian Resorts Management has travelled the world extensively and we believe that the ratings below are still too generous for European standards but are adequate for the Asia region. Please also note that the prices listed here are merely indicative and are no guarantee that this will indeed be the price, please check with us at the time of booking. Prices tend to rise dramatically during July and particularly in the Naadam period. Think to book early if you are coming then.

One of the most popular hotels in Ulaanbaatar, centrally located with relatively clean rooms, one of the best choices available. It is popular with the various consultants who come to Mongolia for a few months and popular with the tourists over the summer months. The rooms are not always in the best conditions and the building could do with a full refit but it is slowly improving and one of the very few descent choices in the city. There is a good Indian restaurant in one of the towers called the Taj Mahal Restaurant, the bar/restaurant on the ground floor level named Casablanca is popular with the miners and some of the expats, its serves the best hamburgers in town but also has chinese/singaporian food and some western dishes. Prices are expensive for its prestations but never the less reasonable considering this is practically as good as it gets!!

The Puma Imperial Hotel is brilliantly located next to Sukhbaatar square, has one of the best Indian Restaurants in town (Delhi Darbar). The rooms are a bit kitsch and sparesly appointed but are clean and tidy. The hotel is definately in the top three recommended hotels in town. The staff is nice and often speaks some form of English. The rates are amongst the most expensive in town along with the Bayangol and the Ulaanbaatar but they are worth it. As a word of warning, the rates are substantially increased in the peak summer months while service and quality are rather lower as they are overwhelmed.

This brand new hotel is located closer to China then it is to Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by the Ger district of Ulaanbaatar it is not a recommended choice and only to be used if you intend on staying within the walls of the hotel. The inside of the hotel is a modern non-descript Asia luxury hotel, grand marble reception, receptionists who barely speak English, overpriced restaurant and most of the hotel is still shut off as not yet completed (true as of July 2007). It is possible that in a few decades the city will move to the surroundings of the hotel but at the moment it is too far to be attractive. The website is a little confusing for its own good, edging style over substance, and often missing out key information. It is never the less the most modern hotel in town and if you do value comfort and known quality then this might be a good choice. There is a bar in the lobby area which is also very expensive but some young Mongolians groups do come and play in the evenings. The hotel was built by Koreans for Koreans so predictably filled with busses of Korean tourists sporting golfing hats.

The Ulaanbaatar is the oldest hotel in Mongolia and is supposedly the best. Well, yes, it might be the best but that's not to stay it is good. Very centrally located next to the Opera, a stone's throw from Sukhbaatar Square, this large block is not inviting by its architecture. It is only very recently that some of the rooms have been renovated and are now of "international" standard. The service is still feels socialist (not less due to the fact that there is a life size statue of Lenin in the forecourt) and the breakfast is not much to rejoice about but the rooms are large, most are of a good standard, the location are excellent and anyway it is all part of the experience.

The Chinggis/Gengghis Khan hotel is the most modern hotel in Ulaanbaatar but sadly it is not very central. Located to the North of the city it is a good 20 minutes walk to Sukhbaatar Square and even further to the entertainment district of Seoul Street. It is never the less well appointed, if rather kitsch. The rooms are identical to millions of other hotel rooms around the world. On the other side of the hotel you will find the Sky shopping centre which is one of the biggest supermarkets in Ulaanbaatar while inside of the hotel there will be such facilities as a Korean Air travel Desk, an Air Market travel desk, a depressing little cafe place, an ornate restaurant, a sparkly fountain water display and the small souvenir shops which are to be expected. The hotel is convenient for conferences and large groups as they have a lot of rooms. Service is neither good nor bad, just descent. The biggest drawback is indeed the location, crime, wind and pollution are high in winter while the roads are congested in summer.

The Continental Hotel was designed to look like a European Palace by someone who has never seen one. It is quite well located in the embassy district of Ulaanbaatar but sadly tries to be something which it isn't. A luxury hotel. It is a descent hotel, not too expensive and quite clean, the rooms are non-descript modern the lobby is dark and gloomy and the food not the best in town. It is never the less one of the favourite hotels of Ulaanbaatar as slightly cheaper than the big ones, is well situated and clean. Diplomats and well to do tourists are known to be staying from time to time. The service is very much like the rest of the building, they pretend well but have no substance behind it. A fun experience in keeping with the adventurous feel of Mongolia.

The Peace Bridge Hotel is a modern'ish hotel in Ulaanbaatar, not quite in the city centre, about 20 minutes walk to Sukhbaatar Square, it's not bad in its prestations, comfortable modern rooms, a variety of bars (including a strip bar) restaurants and small shops. It has a small business centre and some of the staff speak some english. Again popular with tour groups and the like. Not a first choice hotel but a respectable third choice if you have to.

This hotel is located quite far from the city centre (a good 30 minute walk). It is on the road from the airport to the city located not far from the main stadium where the nadaam games take place every yar in July. Absolutely nothing remarkable about it, mediocre all around but does the trick if all you need is a bed and everything else is full. Nothing in common with a Palace but popular with the cheaper large tour groups can be a good option during the games but otherwise to be avoided if it can be helped. One of the only plus points this author could find about the hotel was that the majority of the rooms were quite big and some are well appointed.

The Edelweiss Hotel is a small hotel near the Korean Embassy not too far from the Continental Hotel. It is one of the authors favourite hotels as it is clean, tidy, unpretentious, affordable and the staff are friendly. 5 to 10 minutes walk to Sukhbaatar Square. The hotel looks a bit like a German motorway motel and while it will not suprise you by its originality or comfort neither will it disapoint you. It is a simple hotel with simple prestations but in a sense it is better than the big hotels which are going to give you the same thing with more fuss and charge you more. The hotel is hard to find down little alley ways. The food is not memorable but rather edible with hearty breakfasts in the mornings.

No, don't get too excited, it's not yet done but construction is taking place and completion is eagerly awaited. Located in the Embassy district next to the Star Apartments and the Children's Park, it looks like a fairly ugly sort of building ill in keeping with the city but it is an interesting development on the scene as it is the first international hotel chain to enter the Mongolian Market. It is expected to be completed in May 2008 so watch this space for all the lateste news concerning this hotel.

Ulaanbaatar is filled with guesthouses and they are often the best choice for spending the night in Ulaanbaatar, most have a few private bedrooms, some with en-suite showers, most are centrally located and offer the traveller a relaxed and safe atmosphere to chat with other travellers. It is often a fun experience to have in Mongolia, most of the guesthouses also offer fairly descent tours around the country and the other customers returning from tour are your best source of information and tips concerning the country. For a fraction of the price of hotel they offer less fuss but equal comfort and a great environment. There are about 5 guesthouses in Ulaanbaatar which are trustworthy, offer a descent service and location, try to stick to those five, they have been tried and tested for many years. Many many guesthouses suddently appear during the summer months to make a quick dollar but very few are decent. Most of the guesthouses (actually all of them apart from the Mongolian Resorts Guesthouse) are a bunch of apartments put together in a building, some like the UB guesthouse or Nassan's guesthouse expand every year and are good. The other guesthouses tend to be a clever mongolian who has put a few extra beds in his daughter's bedroom and will come to find you at the train station with promises of a great guesthouse, once there you are often too tired to turn back. Stick to our advice or read the Lonely Planet when it comes to guesthouses.
