Our "In the steppes of Genghis Khan" tour follows the life of what is the best known Mongol in the history of the World. This tour starts in Terelj National Park and takes you to all the places where the emperor's life took a dramatic turn, we will take you to the sight where he killed his own brother, visit the nomads of his birth region and take you to the place where he is supposedly buried with some of the world's greatest treasures, who knows, you might even find some of it...
Overview
The birthplace of Chingiss Khaan, this area contains numerous important historical and cultural sites. Three major river systems have their sources in the protected area including the Tuul river, which flows into Russian Lake Baikal and continues to the Arctic Ocean , and the Onon and Kherlen rivers, which flow east emptying into Pacific Ocean . Over 1,150 species of plants, have been identified and over 50 mammal species, 253 species of bird, and 34 species of fish make their home in the Khaan Khentii protected Area. This area is just perfect for activities such as horse riding, fishing, river rafting, mountain biking, and trekking.
Day 1
Gorkhi-Terelj national park
Terelj is famous for its unique
granite rock formations and pristine alpine scenery. Terelj is a landscape of
transition, from Siberian taiga forest to grass steppe. In spring and summer
the lush meadows are carpeted with wild flowers and the mountain pine forests
and broad streams making this one of the most beautiful areas in Mongolia. We
will drive from Ulaanbaatar to Terelj about 70km. On the way we will make
some stops to explore amazing rock formations. In the evening, we will stay
with a local family and enjoy horse riding for the next few days.
Day 2
Fishing or river rafting at Kherlen river
We will drive 150km on paved road.
If you are a fishing enthusiast you may be interested to join this tour as
the fishing is good between August and October and river rafting is excellent
between June-August.
Day 3-4
Horse trekking to Khukh Lake
Khukh Lake is said to be where
Temujin was crowned Chingiss Khaan in 1206. We will ride a horse in a
beautiful valley about 30km in 2 days.
Day 4-5
Horse trekking to Khangal Lake
This is little bigger than Khukh
lake surrounded by pine trees. We will ride horses for about 30km, exploring
the area in the evening.
Day 7
Baldan Bereeven monastery
This monastery was first built in
1777. At its peak it was one of the three largest monasteries in Mongolia and
home to 8,000 registered monks. It was partly destroyed by the communist
authorities in the 1930's and by fire in the 1970s. Now only ruins
remain. The monastery is currently being restored by
tourist-volunteers. While there we will have the opportunity to assist
with the restoration of the monastery.
Day 8
Oglogchiin Wall
The wall is located in a valley
with pine forests where the ruins of a wall built by natural stone masonry
was erected. No clay or mortar was used to hold the stones together. This
construction is called Oglogchiin Wall. We will stop here over night and
enjoy some trekking around the forest.
Day 9
Fishing at Onon river
Fishing is excellent in the entire
Dadal region, with huge taimen growing up to 1.5 m in length. Taimen are one
of the largest freshwater fish on earth and can be very ferocious.
The best time for fishing is from August-October.
Day 10
Dadal-Home of the Buriyat people
Dadal is gorgeous area of lakes,
rivers, forest and log huts-reminiscent of Siberia, which is only 25km to the
north. It is much like being in Russia without visa. There are also many things
to visit around this area such as Deluun Boldog (Chingiss Khaan was born here
in 1162), Khajuu Bulag (mineral spiring,where the great man once drank) and a
Chingiss Khaan Statue next to small lake.

11-12
Fishing at Onon Balj river
We will go to fishing the junction
of the Onon and Balj river.

13-14
River rafting around the area
Our river trip will transport you
through dramatic landscapes to the untouched corners of Mongolia.
Day 15-16
Drive back to Ulaanbaatar
We will drive about 590km from Dadal to Ulaanbaatar. The road is unpaved but its lot's of fun to take highways in Mongolia!
