Day 2  NOMADIC LIFESTYLE 6-DAYS 5-NIGHTS IN TERELJ-GORKHI NATIONAL PARK (TÖV PROVINCE)

Imagine travelling Mongolia with nomadic families along the lush and beautiful Terelj River, around mountains, through idyllic scenery of Terelj National Park. During your Mongolian cultural journey, you will have the rare opportunity to experience and learn some traditional activities of nomadic lifestyle. On this Mongolian travel route you have the opportunity to slow your pace down to Mongolian nomad level and experience their daily routines.

Difficulty of trip: easy going.

Method of travel: mainly horseback with some ox-carts and trekking (camping).

We will drive you in the morning to Terelj National Park, where you will learn today the methods of saddling a horse and preparing the ox cart. Your local guide will receive you at the village and then you will travel by ox cart or horseback to his home that is located 3 kilometres to the north of Terelj River. Upon arrival you will have a nomadic lunch and tea with the family of Mr. Chuluunhuu who will show you how to saddle a horse and prepare an ox cart. You will have time to practice for yourself afterwards. Later in the evening you will have a nomadic dinner with the family and have lots of fun playing traditional Mongolian games like the ‘ankle bone game’ which is called ‘Shagai’ with the family.

Day 3  Learn the methods of tying bridle and how to make patterns for national dress: After breakfast, you will start your horse ride to the next family that is 24kms away with the local nomadic guide. Upon arrival, in the late afternoon, at Ms. Amarjargal’s family, you will have a nomadic lunch and tea. Ms. Amarjargal will show you how to tie a bridle and how to make pattern designs for national dress; she has great talent at sewing. Afterwards, you will have a nomadic dinner and even tea with the host.

Day 4  Learn the methods of tethering animals and making traditional knots used for dress: After breakfast, you will continue your travel for 9kms to the next family with local nomads. Upon arrival at Mr. Bold’s family, you will have a nomadic lunch and tea with his family. He will show you the methods of how to properly tether livestock as well as how to make a button with cotton or silk for a national dress. Afterwards you will have a nomadic dinner and tea with the family before retiring for the evening.

Day 5  Learn the ancient arts of Mongolian archery, wrestling and dung collecting: In the early morning you will have an opportunity to milk a cow with his wife, then have a nomadic breakfast with the family. Mr. Bold, a champion wrestler, became famous with nine successful rounds (wins) at a regional Naadam festival and was bestowed the official title of ‘Lion’.
Mr. Bold’s father was also famous locally as one of the best horse trainers in the region. It is owing to his and his father’s legacy in the Three Manly Sports of Mongolia that he is the perfect candidate to really learn these ancient Mongolian arts from; while visiting, you have an opportunity to practice archery with him. Later in the day, you will continue your travel to the next family that is around 5 kilometres away (you will cross a river to reach them). Upon arriving at Mr. Ganzorig’s family, you will have lunch and tea. Afterwards, you will help the family in collecting dung, the traditional way, used for making fire. In the evening you will have a homely nomadic dinner and tea before resting for the evening.

Day 6  Learn how nomadic families make dairy products: After breakfast Mr. Ganzorig will guide you to your last family by horse or ox cart for 8kms. Upon arrival, Ms. Uranchimeg will serve you lunch and tea. After your meal and rest, she will show you how to make dried curds. Later in evening, you will have a nomadic dinner and tea with the family.

Day 7  Learn how nomads guide an ox cart: After breakfast her son will show you how to guide an ox cart. You can practice with him in the surrounding area. You’ll deserve today –and certainly desire– a day off in downtown Ulaanbaatar, see the impressive monasteries, markets, museums, etc., that this unique city has to offer, and maybe you will be willing to go out and have fun at the Oasis nightclub later in the night, before going back to the countryside for a couple of weeks! Overnight in Mongolian Resorts Guesthouse.
