Days 1-2 ULAANBAATAR – GOBI DESERT ‘Red Hero’ acquired its Soviet name in 1924 after gaining independence from China. Ulaanbaatar is surrounded by vast hills known as the ‘Four Holy Peaks’ and has the River Tuul flowing through the valley. With the Soviet influenced Sukhbaatar Square lying in the heart of the city, old Soviet buildings stand contrasting against towering new, modern developments transforming the city’s skyline. Newly built residential estates are now emerging in the suburbs, amongst the traditional backdrop of gers – Mongolian dwellings – which can be seen sprawling up the mountains surrounding the city.
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, late in the evening. Transfer to Mongolian Resorts Guesthouse for dinner and relaxation. Day 3 FLAMING CLIFFS – KHONGORYN ELS Bayanzag was given the name ‘Flaming Cliffs’ by palaeontologist Roy Chapman Andrews who was first to discover dinosaur eggs in this area in the early 1920’s. The area is now renowned worldwide for the multitude of dinosaur finds, many of which are on display at the Museum of Natural History in Ulaanbaatar.
This morning you’ll take a short drive to the famous Flaming cliffs. There you will have the opportunity to take your time and enjoy the scenery before heading off to the Khongoryn sand dunes, another highlight of the Gobi Desert. Day 4 KHONGORYN ELS One of the biggest dunes in the Gobi, Khongorin Els, also known as the ‘singing dunes’, are about 100km long and in some places reach a height of 300m – providing a great view over the desert, but requiring a lot of hard work to get to the top! Today is dedicated to taking in the remarkable views of and from the sand dunes. Enjoy a long camel ride in this spectacular area! Overnight stay in Juulchin Gobi Camp 2. Day 5 YOLYN AM Yolyn Am is a dramatic canyon – its valley layered with ice for much of the year – which can be up to 10m thick in winter! The high cliffs provide a haven for wildlife in the area, such as ibex and argali sheep.
In the morning, moving on to the next destination at Yolyn Am. There you can experience a Mongolian horse ride through the amazing deep iced canyon found in the middle of the desert. Day 6 GOBI DESERT – ULAANBAATAR Today you’ll head off by car to Ulaanbaatar. As you’ll drive north this will give you the opportunity to see hundreds of black-tailed gazelles, camels and stunning rock formations. Marvel at the endless scrublands of the Gobi melting into the green steppes of Central Mongolia. Once in Ulaanbaatar transfer to Mongolian Resorts Guesthouse. Day 7 ULAANBAATAR Depart from Ulaanbaatar in the morning. Flight or Train. RESERVATION DETAILS 5 Days / 5 nights Comfort level – Good
